Over the Reality Brings App-Less Indoor Navigation to Città Fiera

Over the Reality has deployed its indoor navigation system inside Città Fiera, one of the largest shopping malls in Italy and Europe, with over 150,000 sqm of GLA across a complex multi-floor retail environment.

This is not a pilot. Not a test. Real visitors navigating in real time.

The project stems from a close collaboration with Città Fiera, which made itself available as a pilot site for the development and validation of the entire system. The complexity of the structure — multiple floors, high visitor traffic — provided the ideal environment to test and refine a truly scalable indoor navigation solution.

How it works

The only sensor needed is your phone camera. Visitors inside the mall scan a QR code or open a web link — no app download required. Our proprietary Visual Positioning System (VPS) matches what the camera sees against a 3D map of the mall and locks your position in under 100 milliseconds. Centimeter-level accuracy. No GPS required.

GPS dies the moment you walk indoors. Our VPS doesn’t.

What we didn’t need

Every beacon-based indoor navigation system before this has failed to scale — hardware costs, maintenance overhead, dead batteries. Our approach is built entirely on computer vision. It scales with a camera and a map. Deploy a mall in days, not months.

Here’s what the Città Fiera deployment required zero of:

  • Beacons
  • Visual markers
  • Wi-Fi triangulation
  • Hardware installations
  • App downloads

Visitors scan a QR code and walk. That’s it.

Navigation is just the entry point

For mall owners, this deployment represents a new digital layer on top of the physical retail experience. The same spatial infrastructure that guides a visitor to a store unlocks a full set of strategic capabilities:

  • Visitor flow analytics
  • Store discoverability
  • Sponsored routes and AR activations
  • Accessibility-friendly paths

Indoor navigation is becoming strategic infrastructure for the next generation of shopping malls. This deployment proves that smart mall infrastructure can be launched quickly, at scale, and without disrupting daily operations.

What’s next

15 more malls are in the pipeline across Italy, with European expansion already underway.

The future of retail destinations will be interactive, data-driven, and spatial. We are building the map layer for the world GPS can’t see.

This is what real-world adoption looks like. Not promises, not whitepapers — a working system inside one of Europe’s largest malls.

This is just the beginning.
